Standard vs Deep vs Move-Out Cleaning
- Standard (maintenance) clean: dusting reachable surfaces, vacuuming and mopping floors, kitchen counters and outside of appliances, bathrooms, making beds, emptying trash.
- Deep clean: everything above plus baseboards, door frames, light switches, inside the microwave, grout and soap scum, behind and under furniture that can be moved. Many companies require one before starting a recurring plan.
- Move-in / move-out clean: an empty home cleaned top to bottom, including inside cabinets, drawers, the oven and the fridge. See our move-out checklist.
Company or Independent Cleaner?
Independent cleaners usually cost less per hour and you often get the same person every time. Companies cost more but normally carry insurance and bonding, handle payroll taxes, and send a replacement when someone is sick. If you hire an individual directly and pay them above the IRS household-employee threshold, you may owe employment taxes; see IRS Publication 926.
What Raises the Price
- First visit or a home that has not been cleaned in a while
- Pets (hair), large families, many bathrooms
- Add-ons: inside the oven or fridge, interior windows, laundry, dishes, walls
- Same-day or weekend booking, and long travel distance
How to Pay Less
- Book weekly or every two weeks; recurring plans are commonly 5–15% cheaper per visit than one-time cleans.
- Pick up clutter before the cleaners arrive so the time goes to cleaning.
- Get at least three written quotes that list exactly what is included.
Should You Tip?
Tipping is not required but is common for one-time and deep cleans, often 15–20% or a set amount per cleaner, and a holiday tip for regular cleaners. Some companies include gratuity or forbid tips; ask.
